SEQUOYAH

(George Gist 1760?-1843)

The inventor of the Cherokee Alphabet was born about 1760 Near Fort Loudon, TN. He grew up in Alabama and spent a great part of his life in Arkansas. He devoted a good part of twenty years to developing this system of writing. The eighty-five characters in the alphabet represent every sound in the Cherokee language. Sequoyah, who is considered one of the greatest literary geniuses of all times died alone and unattended near the village of San Fernand Mexico.
